How much information is geospatially referenced? Networks and cognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents two approaches that aim to capture the portion of geospatially referenced information in user-generated content: a network approach and a cognitive approach. The German Wikipedia is used as research corpus, which is considered a network with the articles being nodes and the links being edges. The Network Degree of Geospatial Reference (NDGR) is introduced as a measurement unit for the network approach. We define NDGR as the shortest path between any Wikipedia article and the closest article within the network that is labeled with coordinates in its headline. Results of an analysis of the German Wikipedia employing this approach are reported. The cognitive approach is manifested by the Categories of Geospatial Reference (CGR): Direct, Indirect and Non-Geospatial Reference. These are categories that may be distinguished and applied by humans. An empirical study including 380 participants was conducted. The results of both approaches are synthesized with the aim to (1) examine correlations between NDGR and the human conceptualization of geospatial reference and (2) to separate geospatial from non-geospatial information. This provides empirical evidence to (in)validate the much-quoted assertion that 80% of all information is geospatially referenced.

A Novel Caching Strategy in Video-on-Demand (VoD) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks Based on Complex Network Theory
The popularity of video-on-demand (VoD) streaming has grown dramatically over the World Wide Web. Most users in VoD P2P networks have to wait a long time in order to access their requesting videos. Therefore, reducing waiting time to access videos is the main challenge for VoD P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for caching video based on peers' priority and video's popula...

متن کاملEdge-tenacity in Networks
Numerous networks as, for example, road networks, electrical networks and communication networks can be modeled by a graph. Many attempts have been made to determine how well such a network is "connected" or stated differently how much effort is required to break down communication in the system between at least some nodes. Two well-known measures that indicate how "reliable" a graph is are the...

Geospatially-oriented social media communications have emerged as a common information resource to support crisis management. Our research compares the capabilities of two popular systems used to collect and visualize such information Project Epic’s Tweak the Tweet (TtT) and Ushahidi. Our research uses geospatially-oriented social media gathered by both projects during recent disasters to compa...
